9 men arrested after street race in Tampa

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Hillsborough County MPs arrested nine men after participating in a street race in Tampa earlier this month.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, undercover MPs were in attendance at the street racing event when it started on January 9 in the Bass Pro Shops parking lot, located at 10501 Palm River Road.

Ahead of the event, MPs said the sheriff’s office had received information about what was going on and decided to take a proactive approach to curb street racing as part of “Operation Burnout.”

“It’s just reckless behavior that’s happening. At one point, one of the cars sort of loses control when it makes a donut and walks into the crowd. Fortunately, no one was hurt, ”said Amanda Granit, spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Once the street race started, MPs said they saw several people burnout, donuts and drive recklessly in the parking lot. With the help of the HCSO Aviation Unit, marked patrol units moved into the parking lot. At this point, the crowd started to disperse.

Nine men were arrested for reckless driving in connection with the street racing event.

Throughout the operation, MEPs say they also carried out 139 roadside checks and issued 106 citations and 40 warnings.

“Street racing has no place here in Hillsborough County,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “This dangerous and reckless behavior will get you behind bars. This is not a game. Street racing can destroy lives, and unfortunately we have seen this scenario unfold in our county in recent years. I hope “Operation Burnout” will serve as an example for others who think about street racing in our community. “

MPs say additional arrests could potentially take place after the event.
